Founded in 1957, it became a full member (Partner) of the International Bird League in 2013 and is also a statutory charity registered in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society is committed to education, scientific research, habitat management and conservation policy initiatives, inspiring and encouraging the public to appreciate and protect wild birds and their habitats together to achieve "human and bird harmony and natural endurance".
