The Fungus Planting Story

Ho Yuen Leung (Leung), one of the artists-in-residence, created a community farm in Sok Kwu Wan using local natural resources, and making full use of the limited space to plant nearly 10 different types of fungi.

Leung will team up with organic farm owner Wong Chin-ming to challenge the common misconception that sizable area is a must for cultivation and demonstrate planting fungi by hand and make enzyme in a regular home environment.

During the workshop, Leung will also share the concept of his art piece, the genesis of his community garden, and how art can be integrated into islander’s daily life.

About the Artist

Ho Yuen-leung

Ho graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1995, majoring in sculpture. His creative concepts are mostly derived from daily life and climate change. He loves nature and enjoys outdoor creative activities and farming. In recent years, he has actively participated in local and overseas art projects related to the natural environment and climate change such as "Fishpond Diving Sustainable Art Festival 2019", "Junk! Woodworking" and “Busan Biennale - Sea Art Festival 2019".

Wong Chin-ming

Dubbed “teacher” by his student, Wong is the owner of Hung Yat Farm. Educated by his father from a young age, who gave up the dream of growing rice to support his family, and planted peach blossoms instead, he mastered the traditional natural farming techniques.

To continue his father’s mission, along with his family's growing allergy to pesticides and preservatives, Mr Wong started the experimental farm. With the practice of zero compounding, no pesticides and chemical fertilizers, the farm only selects credible organic fertilizers, and makes great use of remaining materials in the production process to produce enzymes, fertilizers and feeds.

He aims to restore the original taste and umami of crops and aquatic products, while ensuring food safety and high nutritional value, and named this farming model "Zero Pesticide Farming".
