Li Wensheng

Li Wensheng was born in a small Hakka village in the New Territories of Hong Kong. I moved to the UK at the age of 14, worked in the restaurant at home and studied art. In 1992, he returned to the village where he was born and set up a studio in a 300-year-old school, mainly engaged in sculpture creation, using wood and other natural materials to create formalism and practical art, including his own musical instruments. Many recent sculptures incorporate traditional Chinese cultural concepts, such as the phonetic symbols of Chinese characters. Li Wensheng is also an active performance artist and impromptu musician. He has created performances with artists from different media in Hong Kong. In the past two years, Li Wensheng has retired to the world, collecting old objects and materials from his ancestral village, creating hand-made objects and musical instruments.
